Meaning of Work – Working on What Matters

This ultimately comes down to engagement. I’ve always believed that focusing on the key levers are much more important than worrying about the day to day. To create the meaning of work, the small things matter, like giving feedback and creating an autonomous environment. However, a great manager needs to create an environment that allows meaning even when you’re not in the picture. So, how do you tie engagement to the meaning of work? Try to reframe your group to think like a team. If a member of your team feels their work doesn’t matter, they are thinking about themselves as individuals and looking inwards too much. Individuals who seek praise or individual feedback need to redefine the meaning of contribution and value.

As a manager, you need to bring team objectives and company direction to the forefront and kill the employees’ focus on ‘me’. A sense of engagement and fulfillment will develop from here when they focus on the larger picture. You can do this through regular team communication and alignment sessions, encouraging facilitation and shared communication in smaller pods of the larger team. By creating the foundation of the focus on the team goal’s you create a culture that starts to build itself.
